Agency or Solo: An Honest Look at the Trade
The agency conversation is usually had badly. Agencies pitch reach and creators hear rescue. Independent purists say never sign anything. Both positions are too simple, and the honest answer depends on numbers you probably have not worked out yet.
What you are actually buying
An agency sells you time and reach. They take messages off your plate, they promote, they handle admin, and in the good cases they know things about pricing and platforms that took them years to learn. That is a real product. The question is whether the cut they take is less than the value of the hours and revenue they add. That is a sum, not a feeling.
What you give up
Control of the relationship, mostly. If your team messages your buyers, your buyers have a relationship with your team. If that arrangement ends badly, the question of who those buyers belong to gets very sharp very quickly. Before you sign, ask exactly what you walk away with. If the answer is vague, that is the answer.
The maths that decides it
Take your current monthly revenue and your honest weekly hours. Work out your effective hourly rate. Now assume the agency takes their percentage but frees fifteen hours a week and grows revenue by whatever they promise, halved, because promises are optimistic. Recalculate. If the number is not clearly better, the answer is no. This is the same discipline as running it like a business.
Solo does not mean alone
A lot of people sign with an agency because the admin is crushing them, not because they need reach. If that is you, the cheaper answer is tooling. Automating listings, syncing platforms, and having your own storefront removes most of the same hours for a fraction of a revenue share, and you keep the buyer relationship. The full case for that is in the hidden cost of doing everything manually.
Exit terms matter more than entry terms
Nobody reads the exit clause when they are excited. Notice period, who keeps the accounts, who keeps the content, whether there is a non compete, what happens to your storefront. Read those first. A good agency will have clean answers and will not mind being asked.
Do the hourly rate calculation before your next agency call. Go in knowing the number the deal has to beat, and the conversation becomes very short and very clear.
