Subscriptions Versus One Off Sales: Pricing Both Properly

KinkCoach · · 4 min read

Most sellers pick one pricing model by accident and then wonder why income is either flat or wildly unpredictable. Subscriptions and one off sales solve different problems, and running both badly is worse than running either one well.

What a subscription actually buys you

Predictability, and not much else. A subscriber base means you can forecast, plan, and sleep. What it does not do is capture what your best buyers would happily pay. If someone would spend two hundred a month and your subscription is fifteen, you have priced yourself down to your least committed buyer. That is the cost of the model, and it is why almost nobody runs subscriptions alone.

What one off sales actually buy you

Upside and volatility. Your best month and your worst month can differ by a factor of three. That is fine if you have a buffer and terrifying if you do not. One off sales also let each buyer spend at their own level, which is much closer to how people actually behave. The pricing discipline for this is covered in what buyers actually pay for.

Use the subscription as the door

The version that works for most people is a subscription priced low enough to be an easy yes, treated as the entry point rather than the business. It gets people in, it keeps them in contact, and it funds your baseline. The real income comes from what those people buy afterwards. Priced this way, a cheap subscription is not undercharging, it is customer acquisition.

Do not discount the thing that earns

The mistake is running sales on your one off items to boost a slow week. It teaches your regulars to wait. If you need momentum, add value instead: a bonus, a bundle, something extra at the same price. The price you set is a signal about the work, and constantly cutting it says something you do not want said. That is the argument in how to price worn items.

Review quarterly, not weekly

Prices need reviewing, but not in response to one quiet fortnight. Set a quarterly date, look at three months of data, and adjust once. Reactive pricing produces a chaotic ladder that nobody, including you, can explain.

Work out what percentage of last month came from subscriptions versus one off sales. If subscriptions are over eighty percent, your best buyers are underpaying, and that is your next fix.
