Protecting Your Content From Leaks

If you sell content long enough, some of it will end up somewhere you did not put it. This is not a reflection on you and it is not preventable in full. What you can control is how much, how easily, and how much of your life you spend on it.

Watermark for tracing, not for stopping

A visible watermark deters lazy reposting. A subtle per buyer identifier does something more useful: it tells you which customer leaked it. That is worth more than deterrence, because it converts a mystery into a name and lets you cut off the source rather than chasing copies forever.

Reduce the surface

Every place your content exists is a place it can leak from. Old platforms you no longer use, shared drives, a Dropbox link you sent someone in 2023. Close accounts you have quit properly, expire links, and stop sending unwatermarked originals to anyone for any reason. Most leaks are not clever, they are a file that was left somewhere easy.

Takedowns work, in batches

DMCA notices genuinely work on hosts, search engines and most reposting sites. They also take time, and doing them one at a time as you spot them will consume your week. Set a fixed session, monthly, work through a list, and close the tab. Doing this reactively at midnight is how it turns into an obsession that costs more than the leak did.

Know what is worth chasing

A clip on a forum with eleven views is not costing you money. A full back catalogue on an indexed site is. Spend your effort where it changes your income, and let the rest go. This is the same discipline as protecting your time, applied to something that feels much more personal.

Your buyers are the real defence

People who feel a relationship with you leak less. It is not sentiment, it is observable. Regulars who value the access do not want to be the reason it stops. Anonymous strangers who bought one thing have no such reason. Another quiet argument for building a base of people who actually know you, as in owning your audience.

Search your own name and two of your listing titles today. Whatever you find, put one monthly session in the diary for takedowns and do not think about it in between.
