Tax and Bookkeeping for UK Adult Sellers
The tax side is the part people avoid until January, and then avoid harder. It is genuinely not complicated. It is only frightening because nobody explains that HMRC treats this like any other self employed trade.
It is a trade like any other
Money you earn selling content or items is trading income. It gets declared on a Self Assessment return like a plumber's or a photographer's would. Nobody at HMRC is scandalised, and the nature of the work does not change the arithmetic. The only thing that gets people in trouble is not declaring, and that is a much bigger problem than any conversation about what you sell.
Records from day one, not from panic
Every sale in, every expense out, dated, in one place. A spreadsheet is fine if you actually keep it. What kills people is reconstructing a year from four platform dashboards, a PayPal history and memory. Do it weekly, it takes ten minutes. Do it annually, it takes a weekend and it will be wrong.
Expenses you are probably missing
Items you buy to sell. Postage and packaging. Equipment, lighting, phones apportioned by use. Subscriptions and tools you use for the business. A share of home costs if you work from home. People routinely under claim because they never wrote it down at the time. Keep receipts as you go, which is exactly why the weekly habit matters. The wider version of this is in running it like a business.
Keep it separate
A separate bank account for the business is the single highest value thing on this list. It makes bookkeeping mechanical, it makes your figures defensible, and it stops you spending the tax money. Set aside a fixed percentage of every payment into a second pot the day it arrives, and January stops being an event.
Get an accountant if the numbers justify it
Once you are earning properly, an accountant costs a few hundred and usually saves more than that in claims you did not know about. Find one who does not blink at the industry. They exist. This is part of what going full time actually looks like, covered in going full time as an independent seller.
Open the separate account this week and start moving a set percentage of every payment into a tax pot on the day it lands. That one habit prevents most of the trouble people get into.
