When a Platform Changes the Rules Overnight

Every site you sell on will change something eventually. A category disappears, a word becomes disallowed, payouts move to a different schedule. It arrives as a banner or an email, and the first hour after reading it is when most of the avoidable harm gets done.

Find out what actually changed

Announcements are written for everybody, so most of what they say will not apply to you. Read it twice and write down the one sentence that touches your listings. If you cannot find that sentence, the change probably does not reach you, and acting on it anyway costs you a day.

Do not mass edit on the first afternoon

The instinct is to go through everything at once. That is how a hundred listings end up rewritten to a rule that gets clarified the following week. Change one, see that it is accepted, then do the rest. A single test listing is worth more than any amount of reading between the lines.

Keep your own copy of everything

The people who cope best with a rule change are the ones who did not have to reconstruct their own descriptions from the site that just changed them. If your text, prices and photos exist somewhere you control, a rule change is an afternoon of edits. If they only exist on the platform, it is a rebuild.

Ask before you assume the worst

Support will usually answer a specific question about one listing far better than a general one about policy. Name the listing, quote the rule, ask whether it applies. That reply is worth more than a forum thread of guesses, and you can point at it later.

Notice what it tells you

A site that changes its terms without notice will do it again. That is not a reason to leave, but it is a reason not to have everything in one place. The cost of a second shop is a few hours. The cost of finding out too late that you had one shop is the whole business.
