Your First Three Listings

The hardest listing you will ever write is the first one, and it is hard for a reason that has nothing to do with writing. Until something is up, nothing is decided. Once three things are up, the shop is a real place and every later decision is a small adjustment rather than a leap.

Start with what you already have

Do not begin by making something new. Look at what is already in the drawer, already worn, already photographed. The first listing exists to open the shop, not to be your best work, and the fastest route to it is almost always something you own this evening.

Three is enough to open with

One listing looks like an accident and a buyer cannot tell whether you are trading. Three looks like a shop, gives someone a choice, and tells you something the moment it goes live, because the one that gets the attention is rarely the one you expected. Twenty is not better than three, it is just twenty listings written before you knew anything.

Price the first one to be bought

The first sale is worth more than the margin on it. It tells you the parcel arrives, the payment clears and the description held up, and none of that is knowable in advance. Price it so it moves. You can raise prices later with regulars in hand, and that is a much easier conversation than starting high and waiting.

Write it for someone who has never met you

Say what the item is, how long it was worn, what condition it is in and what the buyer actually receives. The listings that stall are usually the ones that assume a reader who already knows how this works. A stranger with a card in their hand will not ask a clarifying question, they will simply go elsewhere.

Put a date on it

Decide which evening the first three go up and treat it as a fixed appointment. An empty shop is not a sign you are doing it wrong. It is a decision that has not been made yet, and it does not get easier by being left, because the only thing that changes while you wait is how long it has been sitting there.
