Building an Email List You Actually Own

You have almost certainly heard the warning about diversifying across platforms, and it is good advice as far as it goes. It misses something, though. Every platform in that spread, however many you use, is still a platform. It can freeze you, throttle you or change its terms overnight, and your audience goes with it because the audience was never yours. It belonged to whichever app you were standing inside.

An email list does not have this problem. Nobody can suspend an address book. Nobody can quietly stop showing your posts to the people who already asked for them. It is the one channel where reaching your own audience is not subject to somebody else's algorithm having a good day.

Starting one is smaller work than it sounds. You do not need a newsletter platform or a content calendar on day one. You need a single sentence somewhere your regulars already see you, saying that you send an occasional email about new items or availability, and a place to type an address. A link in a bio, a line at the bottom of a listing, a mention when someone messages you directly. The ask is small because the value has to be obvious: fewer notifications than a platform, more certainty that it reaches them.

Then use it sparingly and honestly. The fastest way to make somebody delete an email address is to email them constantly, and the second fastest is to email them about things they did not sign up for. Restock notices, a genuine sale, an account move if a platform ever forces one. That is enough to justify its existence, and it is exactly the kind of message a regular is glad to get.

The return on this is not visible for months, which is why almost nobody does it. Then one day a platform does something drastic, half your following cannot find you, and the sellers with a list quietly keep trading while everyone else starts again from nothing.
