Free Previews Are Not the Same as Free Work
A free preview is meant to prove that the paid version is worth buying. Somewhere along the way, for a lot of creators, the preview quietly grows until it is doing the job the paid product was supposed to do, and nobody made that decision on purpose.
It usually starts with generosity. A longer sample here, an extra clip there, a detailed answer to a question that was really a paid consult in disguise. Each single instance feels reasonable in isolation, because it is small and the person asking seems genuinely interested. The problem only shows up in aggregate, when you notice how many people got the substance of what you sell without ever reaching for their card.
The fix is not to become stingy. It is to decide, in advance and in writing to yourself, what the preview actually demonstrates and where it stops. A preview should show the quality and the voice of the work. It should not contain the answer, the full piece, or the specific thing the buyer actually came to solve. If someone can walk away satisfied from the free version alone, the free version has quietly become the product.
This is easiest to lose track of in direct conversation, because a message thread has no natural edge the way a listing page does. Building a private, boring rule such as "the preview is one paragraph, always" removes the need to judge it fresh every single time, which is exactly when generosity tends to slip.
None of this is about mistrust of the people asking. Most are not trying to get something for nothing. It is about protecting the line between a sample and the thing itself, because if you cannot tell where that line is anymore, your buyers cannot either.
