Insurance and Cover: What Independent Sellers Actually Need

Most independent sellers never think about insurance until something goes wrong, and by then it is a question rather than a plan. A parcel is lost and a buyer wants their money back twice over. A laptop with your only photo library is stolen. Someone claims an item damaged them, however unlikely that sounds. None of these are common, but none of them are rare enough to bet a whole year's income against.

Start with what you are actually exposed to, not with a product somebody is trying to sell you. If you work from home, check whether your contents insurance even covers stock and equipment used for trading, because most standard home policies exclude business use entirely and will refuse a claim on exactly that basis. If you post physical items, ask whether the carrier's own compensation actually matches what the item is worth, because the default cover on a cheap tracked service is often a token amount that would not replace a single good order.

Public liability sounds like something only bigger businesses need, and for most sellers here it genuinely is not urgent. But if you ever meet buyers, run in-person sessions, or ship anything that could plausibly cause harm, it stops being theoretical. Read a policy before you decide it does not apply to you, rather than assuming from the name.

Digital risk is the one sellers underrate most. Your content, your customer messages, your records: none of that is covered by contents insurance, and none of it is backed up just because it lives in an app. A stolen phone or a locked account can cost more than any parcel ever will. Back up what you cannot afford to lose, on a schedule you actually keep to, before you spend a penny on a policy.

None of this needs solving this afternoon. It needs a real half hour, with your actual setup in front of you, checking what you already have before assuming you have nothing or that what you have is enough. Most sellers find they are covered for less than they think, in exactly the place they were relying on.
