Raising Prices Without Losing Your Regulars

KinkCoach · · 4 min read

Most sellers raise prices by not raising them, then resent every order for six months. The fear is always the same: the regulars will leave. Some will. Fewer than you think, and not the ones you would miss.

Raise on new listings first

The lowest risk increase is one nobody has to be told about. Price new items at the new rate and leave existing listings alone for a few weeks. You get real data on whether the higher number sells before you have asked anyone to accept a change. If the new items move at the new price, the argument is over and you did not have to have it.

Do not apologise in the announcement

If you do tell people, tell them plainly and briefly. Prices go up from the first of the month. That is the whole message. Explaining yourself at length reads as negotiable, and it invites a conversation you did not want. Sellers who write three paragraphs of justification get three paragraphs of pushback.

Protect the regulars deliberately, not accidentally

If someone has bought from you repeatedly, hold their rate for a stated period, and say so. This costs you very little because repeat buyers are a small share of orders and a large share of your goodwill. It also converts the increase from something happening to them into something you exempted them from.

Expect the quiet fortnight

Orders usually dip for a week or two after any change, then recover. This is the part that panics people into reversing a decision that was working. Give it a month before you judge it, and judge it on revenue rather than order count, because fewer orders at a better price is the entire point.

Know what you will say to a haggler

Decide in advance, once, so you are not improvising at eleven at night. Something like: the price is the price, but I will do a bundle if you want two. That holds the line while leaving a door open, and it stops each request being a fresh negotiation with yourself.

The sellers who never raise prices are not being kind to their buyers. They are quietly working more hours for the same money and calling it loyalty.
