Setting Working Hours Buyers Actually Respect

KinkCoach · · 4 min read

Selling like this has no closing time, and that is the trap. The phone is always there, messages arrive at every hour, and answering at two in the morning teaches people that two in the morning is a time you answer.

Buyers adapt to whatever you show them

They are not being unreasonable, they are responding to evidence. Reply instantly at midnight for a month and midnight becomes the expectation, and any night you do not is read as being ignored. You set that, not them.

Publish the hours somewhere visible

One line in your bio or your listings. Messages answered between these times. It is remarkable how much this removes, because most impatience comes from not knowing rather than from genuine urgency.

Keep an eye on the difference between urgent and loud

Very little in this work is actually urgent. A late reply on a postage question is fine. Someone whose order is genuinely stuck deserves quicker attention. Learning to tell those apart at a glance is most of what stops the job following you around.

Batch the replies

Two or three fixed times a day rather than continuously. You will answer the same number of messages in far less total time, and you get the far larger benefit of the hours in between belonging to you rather than being interruptible.

Expect a short adjustment

If you have been always on, the first fortnight of not being will feel like you are losing something. Watch revenue rather than response time. It almost always holds, and what you get back is the ability to finish a meal.

Availability is not the product. Sellers who are always on do not earn more, they just stop being able to stop.
