When a Buyer Goes Quiet Mid Order

A buyer messages twice a day, agrees the item, and then stops answering. No payment, no explanation. Most sellers spend the next week checking their phone and drafting messages they do not send.

Assume nothing has gone wrong

The overwhelming majority of quiet buyers are not offended, scammed or gone. They got busy, or they had second thoughts about the money, or the conversation stopped being urgent the moment they stepped away from it. Reading it as rejection is the fastest way to write something you regret.

One follow up, then stop

Send one short message after two or three days. Something like: still happy to sort this whenever suits, the item is here. That is the whole thing. It reopens the door without asking them to explain themselves, and a buyer who feels chased is a buyer who never comes back.

Do not hold stock on a promise

Nothing is reserved until it is paid for. If somebody else wants the item, sell it, and tell the first buyer plainly that it went. Holding an item for a week on a maybe costs you real money and teaches you to resent people who have not actually done anything wrong.

Take the deposit next time

If a custom needs your time before it needs their money, that is exactly when a deposit belongs. It filters the browsing from the buying, and it does it before you have spent an evening on the work rather than after.

Let the door stay open

Quiet buyers come back surprisingly often, weeks later, usually with an apology nobody asked for. The ones who come back are the ones who were not made to feel awkward about going quiet. That is worth more than being right about the order they abandoned.

Silence is information about their week, not a verdict on you. Treat it that way and you will spend a lot less time upset about orders that were never lost in the first place.
