When Sales Go Quiet: What to Check Before You Panic

KinkCoach · · 4 min read

Every seller hits a week where nothing sells. The listings are the same, the photos are the same, you are doing what you did last month, and the orders simply stop. It is the most common reason people quit, and almost none of them needed to.

The first thing to understand is that a quiet week is usually not about you. Demand in this work moves with paydays, school holidays, weather, and the ordinary rhythm of people having money at the end of the month and not having it in the middle. If your sales dip in the third week of the month, that is a calendar, not a verdict on your work.

So before you change anything, check the boring explanations. Did your listings drop down the search results because you have not touched them? Did a platform change what it shows on the front page? Have your reposts actually been running, or did the tool stop three days ago and nobody noticed? A surprising number of quiet weeks turn out to be a technical fault rather than a market one, and you cannot see that from the inside without looking.

The danger is what people do next. The instinct is to slash prices, and it is almost always wrong. A discount tells your existing buyers that your normal price was optional, and they will wait for the next one rather than pay it. If you want to move stock, add something instead of taking money off. A longer voice note, a second photo, a handwritten card. The buyer gets more, and your price holds.

The second instinct is to post more, louder and more often. That usually makes it worse. A quiet week is a good week to work on the things that pay you later: rewriting the three listings that never sell, photographing the items sitting in a drawer, replying properly to the buyer who asked a question a fortnight ago. None of that produces a sale today. All of it produces sales in a month.

It is also worth being honest about which quiet is which. A quiet week is normal. A quiet month with no enquiries at all is a signal, and the thing to examine then is not your prices but your visibility. If nobody is asking, nobody is seeing.

Keep a note of your own quiet periods across a few months. Most sellers find they repeat, and once you can see the pattern coming you stop reading it as failure and start using it as the week you get your admin done.
