When the Brief Changes After You Have Already Started

It rarely arrives as one obvious demand. It arrives as a small addition here, a slightly different angle there, a "while you are at it, could you also" that sounds reasonable on its own and only adds up when you look back at the thread as a whole. By the time the job is finished, you have done noticeably more than the price you quoted covered, and saying so now feels like it would make you look petty for something you should have raised weeks ago.

The honest fix has to happen earlier than that, and it is a habit rather than a hard conversation. The first time an addition arrives that was not in the original brief, name it plainly and kindly in the same message where you agree to it: "Happy to add that, it is a bit outside the original scope so I will add a small amount for it." Said once, early, in a friendly tone, it costs almost nothing and sets an expectation that the rest of the project quietly respects.

What makes this hard is that most sellers only notice scope creep once it has already cost them, at which point flagging it retroactively reads as a complaint rather than a policy. Naming it at the first addition, before resentment has had time to build, changes the entire tone of the conversation. It is a boundary stated as information, not a grievance raised after the fact.

It also protects the client from an outcome neither of you wants: discovering at the end that the price they agreed to and the work they actually received were two different things, with nobody having said so along the way. A client who is told early rarely objects. A client who is told at the invoice usually does.

Write the habit into your own process rather than trusting yourself to remember it under pressure. A simple note in the brief template, a line you say the first time anything is added, is enough to make the boundary automatic rather than something you have to decide fresh every time it comes up.
