Writing a Bio That Does Work While You Sleep

KinkCoach · · 4 min read

Most bios read like a mood. Adjectives, a couple of emojis, something about being naughty. They are pleasant and they do no work at all, because the person reading has three specific questions and none of them are answered.

The three questions

What do you sell, what is it like dealing with you, and what happens next. That is the whole job. A buyer who can answer those three things is ready to message you. One who cannot will scroll on, and you will never know they were there.

Lead with the actual items

Name what you sell in plain words in the first line. Not a hint, not a tease, the actual category. People searching for a specific thing will not decode you, and the ones who would have bought are exactly the ones who move on quickest when they are unsure.

Say how you work

One line on wear time, one on postage, one on how fast you reply. This reads as unglamorous and it is the part that converts, because it answers the anxiety underneath a first purchase, which is always some version of will this person actually deliver.

End with the next step

Tell them what to do. Message me with the item and the wear time you want. A bio that stops after describing you leaves the buyer to invent their own opening line, and a surprising number of them will decide it is too awkward and close the tab.

Then leave it alone

Rewrite it when something real changes, not when you feel restless. Sellers who rework their bio every fortnight are usually avoiding a harder job, and the bio was rarely the thing holding sales back.

A good bio is boring to write and quietly effective. It answers the questions you are tired of being asked, which means you stop being asked them.
